Rocha,Matheus dos Santos; Silva,Guilherme Liberato da; Ferla,Noeli Juarez.
Neoseiulus HUGHES, 1948 is currently one of the largest genus of Phytoseiidae Berlese. Neoseiulus demitei sp. nov., a new species of phytoseiid mite from Rio Grande do Sul State, Brazil, is illustrated and described based on specimens collected on Tibouchina sp. (Melastomataceae) plants. This new species differs from others by having most of propodossomal setae reaching the base of nearby setae and a constriction of ventrianal shield at level of preanal pores. Nevertheless, this new species is the first of the species subgroup kennetti described from Brazil. A key of Neoseiulus species reported in Brazil is also included.

Age-dependent fecundity of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) with sublethal doses of gammacyhalothrin BABT
Pereira,Alexandre Igor Azevedo; Ramalho,Francisco de Sousa; Bandeira,Catarina de Medeiros; Malaquias,José Bruno; Zanuncio,José Cola.
Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) was exposed to gammacyhalothrin to study the stimulatory effect of low concentrations of this pyrethroid. The doses studied were 23.4375, 11.7188, 5.8594, 2.9297, 1.4648, 0.7324 mg.litre-1 and water, as control. The third, fourth, and fifth instars of P. nigrispinus were shorter with all the doses of this insecticide. The survival and longevity of this predator was highest with the lowest doses. The oviposition period of P. nigrispinus decreased as the doses increased. The lowest pre-and postoviposition periods were found with 11.7188 mg.litre-1 of gammacyhalothrin. The dose 0.7324 mg.litre-1 increased the clutch interval. The egg viability was similar between the treatments. The number of eggs per...

Asymmetric intraguild predation of Harmonia axyridis (Pallas, 1773) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) on a native Coccinellidae guild Rev. Bras. entomol.
Castro-Guedes,Camila Fediuk de; Almeida,Lúcia Massutti de; Moura,Mauricio Osvaldo.
Abstract Harmonia axyridis is an exotic species that can cause serious impacts on native biodiversity in areas where it is introduced to act as a biological control agent. This predator is often involved with intraguild predation, in most cases with aphids predators. Here, we report the results of experiments designed to understand the outcome of the invasion of H. axyridis on native coccinellid aphidophagous guilds using intraguild predation as a theoretical framework. Tests were conducted to determine the interactions between 1st and 4th instars larvae and H. axyridis adults, with Cycloneda sanguinea, Cycloneda pulchella, Eriopis connexa and Hippodamia convergens larvae, as well as eggs predation rate. Two treatments were used: absence and presence of...

Biologia de Agistemus floridanus Gonzalez (Acari, Stigmaeidae) Zoologia
Ferla,Noeli Juarez; Moraes,Gilberto José de.
The rubber tree (Hevea brasiliensis Muell. Arg.) (Euphorbiaceae) is attacked by various species of phytophagous mites in Brazil. Studies conducted in the State of Mato Grosso showed the presence of Agistemus floridanus Gonzalez, 1965 (Stigmaeidae) on rubber trees, associated with the mite Tenuipalpus heveae Baker, 1945. The aim of this work was to study the biology of that predator in the laboratory, when fed with T. heveae as prey. The study was started with 22 eggs, which resulted in 15 females reaching adult hood. To determine the effect of mating on oviposition, 30 females were used; half of those were maintained isolated and the remaining were maintained then with males during the whole adult stage. The stage of egg was the longest, with a duration of...

Effects of Food Deprivation on the Development of Coleomegilla maculata (De Geer) (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) Neotropical Entomology
Santos-Cividanes,TM; Anjos,ACR dos; Cividanes,FJ; Dias,PC.
The lady beetle Coleomegilla maculata (De Geer) is a natural enemy of several insect pests and feeds on pollen and nectar to survive periods when prey is scarce. The effect of the feeding interval on the development, survival, fecundity, and longevity of C. maculata was determined. Newly hatched larvae of C. maculata were reared individually and fed with eggs of the Mediterranean flour moth Anagasta kuehniella (Zeller) at intervals of one, two, and three days under controlled conditions (23 ± 1ºC; 60 ± 10% RH; 12 h phtophase). The duration of larval instars and the total larval stage was prolonged as the feeding interval increased. The larval period lasted on average 9.2 ± 0.19 days when the larvae were fed daily with prey, and 14.6 ± 0.48 days when food...

Estimative of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) (Heteroptera: Pentatomidae) development time with non linear models Neotropical Entomology
Medeiros,Rômulo S.; Ramalho,Francisco S.; Serrão,José E.; Zanuncio,José C..
The objective of this study was to evaluate the precision of the non linear models of Davidson (1942, 1944), Stinner et al. (1974), Sharpe & DeMichele (1977), and Lactin et al. (1995) to describe relationship between developmental rate of different stages of Podisus nigrispinus (Dallas) and temperature. Lower values of R² for the models of Davidson (0.1593 to 0.2672, and 0.1406 to 0.2804 for males and females, respectively) and of Stinner et al. (0.2136 to 0.6389, and 0.1417 to 0.3045 for males and females, respectively) showed that these models were not adequate to estimate developmental rate of P. nigrispinus as function of temperature. However, high values of R² for the models of Sharpe & DeMichele (0.9226 to 0.9893, and 0.8818 to 0.9914...

Falco sparverius (Aves: Falconiformes) preying upon Nyctinomops laticaudatus (Chiroptera: Molossidae) Rev. Bras. Zool.
Aguiar,Ludmilla Moura de Souza; Motta,Adarene; Esberárd,Carlos.
In Brazil, there are two published references on the diet of American kestrel falcons, Falco sparverius Linnaeus, 1758, and one is for the Cerrado biome. The only mammal prey so far found in the diet of F. sparverius was the rodent Calomys tener (Winge, 1887). Herein we report on daily hunting activities by American kestrel falcons at a factory in the city of Uberlândia, state of Minas Gerais, southeastern Brazil, during an attempt to remove a bat colony. Two American kestrel falcons were observed on 14 occasions during two consecutive days: in two of these occasions, they were hunting in pairs, from 12:00 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. on 06/X/2003, and from 07:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. on 07/X/2003. Feeding and reproductive ecology of Cichla piquiti Kullander & Ferreira, 2006 within its native range, Lajeado reservoir, rio Tocantins basin Neotropical Ichthyology
Marto,Vanilcia Clementino de Oliveira; Akama,Alberto; Pelicice,Fernando Mayer.
Cichla piquiti is endemic to the Tocantins-Araguaia river basin, but information about its biology is restricted to populations introduced in other basins. In order to fill this gap, we investigated the feeding ecology and reproductive dynamics of C. piquiti in Lajeado reservoir, rio Tocantins. A total of 270 fish were collected between November 2010 and October 2011. The diet is rich and composed of at least 23 resources, predominantly fish (at least 19 species). We observed no clear influence of sex, periods and ontogeny on diet, which was basically composed of Characidae and Cichlidae. Considering its reproductive dynamics, immature, reproductive and non-reproductive fish were recorded during the whole study, and reproductive effort did not differ among...
